We shot these photos in Guelph, but it looks like somewhere in Europe.
There’s a moment that happens at the Guelph Arboretum in summer when the fountains are on, the gardens are full, and the light is coming through the trees just right. It stops feeling like Guelph.
It feels like somewhere else entirely. Somewhere warmer, slower, further away. Like you stepped out of your regular life and into the middle of a vacation you didn’t plan for.
That’s what Jessie and Tim’s session felt like from the moment we arrived.

Every location brings something different to a session. But the Arboretum in summer brings something I don’t find everywhere, a sense of place. Structured gardens, architecture, shade that moves with you, and colour that feels considered rather than accidental. The fountains especially. There’s something about water in the frame that makes everything feel a little more elevated, a little more like somewhere you’d travel to see.
When I’m recommending locations to couples in the Guelph area, the Arboretum in summer and any season if I’m being honest is one of the first places I mention. Not because other spots don’t work, but because this one consistently produces something that feels bigger than where you actually are.
We laughed a lot. That’s the honest version.
Jessie and Tim care about each other so much and it shows in everything. The way they move together, the way they make each other laugh. We moved through the gardens, found pockets of light, used the fountains as a backdrop without making it feel forced, like an adventure and right from the start it all just flowed.
That’s what I’m always chasing, the point where it stops feeling like a photoshoot and starts feeling like a date!
The result is a gallery that feels cohesive and effortless, elevated without being stiff, it was a day they actually lived rather than something they showed up to perform.
The location does a lot of the work but it doesn’t do all of it.
What made Jessie and Tim’s session feel the way it did was the combination of location, how they dressed, and the fact that they trusted the process instead of trying to manage it. They showed up ready to move, ready to laugh, and explore.
That openness is everything. The Arboretum gives you the setting. The couple brings the feeling. When both are right, you get something that looks like it was shot somewhere in Europe and was actually shot twenty minutes from home.
If you’re considering the Arboretum for your session, a few things that actually matter:
Time of day is everything. I have shot here at every-time of day but the light in the late afternoon through the trees is unlike anything you’ll find at midday. Early evening in summer is the sweet spot.
Dress to match the vibe of the environment you like. This fountain location we used leans elevated naturally, garden vibes rather than casual weekend. But this location also offers trees, a marsh with wooden boardwalk, fields and so much more. You don’t need to be formal but you want your outfits to sit in the same world as the setting you choose.
Come ready to move. The best frames from this location happen between the posed ones, when you’re walking to the next spot or reacting to something that just happened. That’s where the real session lives.
If you’re planning an engagement session in Guelph and want something that feels intentional, romantic, and a little bit like you escaped somewhere beautiful for an afternoon, the Guelph Arboretum is the place.
Inquire here if you’d like to talk about your own session!
