Capturing the Heart of a Sanctuary: Huey, Kim, and Her Four-Legged Family
When Kim reached out to me with a special request to photograph her older horse, Huey, I knew this session would be truly unique. Huey isn't just any horse—he's an integral part of Kim's little sanctuary at home in Ontario, Canada. The place where her love for animals is evident in every corner. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this was more than just a photo session; it was an opportunity to capture the deep bond between Kim and her beloved animals.
Huey's personality made itself known most delightfully as soon as we started. He had us laughing and sweating as he showed off his quirks. His energy was infectious, and seeing how much he loved being the center of attention was a joy. Huey has a presence that's impossible to ignore, and I wanted to ensure that shone through in every shot. But Huey wasn't the only star of the day. Kim's home is filled with a variety of animals, each one with its unique personality and charm. We included them in the session, capturing what makes Kim's sanctuary unique. From the curious looks of the smaller animals to the gentle interactions, each moment was a testament to the love and care that filled this home.
Kim had a specific vision for this session: she wanted her animals to be the show's stars, with herself included just enough to highlight the connection she shares with them. To make this happen, we sprinkled in some black background portraits (noirs), which added a dramatic flair to the photos. The contrast created by the black background allowed Huey to stand out in a striking and elegant way. It was the perfect way to highlight Huey's majestic nature and his deep bond with Kim.
This session was a beautiful reminder of our powerful connections with our animals. Huey, with his big personality, and the other animals in Kim's sanctuary each played a part in creating images that are not just photographs but memories that will last a lifetime. I'm grateful to have been a part of this experience and had the chance to capture the heart of Kim's sanctuary.
